Fixed-wavelength Pathways

The evidence supporting visible-light therapy

Conventional photobiomodulation therapies (PBM) typically deliver one or a few discrete wavelengths from each device. Wavelengths in the red spectrum (630-700nm) have been shown to activate cytochrome c oxidase to improve mitochondrial functioning. However, wavelengths in the blue spectrum (400-450nm) have also been shown to improve mitochondrial functioning via a different mechanism.

Which wavelengths may be optimum? We don't know.

Photobiomodulation therapies (PBM) provide photonic energy and information (wavelength) to the skin and deeper tissues. Photo-transducing mechanisms of action (MOA) convert the energy to the forms needed by the various healing processes.

A review of a few mechanisms of action

Since terrestrial life began, organisms have needed to detect and respond to small differences spectral distributions. The organism's life depended upon navigating and responding to those differences.

A 2019 review paper by Serrage et al. includes details of the effects for 53 discrete visible wavelengths (diamonds in the graphic below).

The studies aimed to link a discrete wavelength with a mechanism.


Few studies compared multiple wavelengths for a single mechanism or multiple mechanisms for a single wavelength. The concepts of synergy or context were not considered.
